FAQ's

WHAT CAUSES A GUMMY SMILE?

A gummy smile, also known as excessive gingival display, can stem from various factors, including:

  • Overactive Upper Lip Muscles: When the muscles that control the upper lip’s movement are overly active, they can elevate the lip higher than normal, exposing more gum tissue.
  • Short Upper Lip: A shorter upper lip can lead to inadequate coverage of the gums during a smile.
  • Hypermobile Upper Lip: If the upper lip is hypermobile, it can move excessively, resulting in a gummy appearance.
  • Excessive Gum Tissue: Some individuals naturally have more gum tissue, which becomes more apparent when they smile.
  • Skeletal Factors: Abnormalities in facial and jaw structure can also contribute to the appearance of a gummy smile.
  • Smile Dynamics: The interplay of lip movement and muscle coordination during smiling can influence the visibility of gum tissue.

A prevalent treatment option is the use of muscle relaxant products to help ease the tension in the upper lip area. These products work by inhibiting neurotransmitters, which prevents the upper lip muscles from contracting, leading to a noticeable reduction in gum visibility while smiling.

Identifying the underlying causes of a gummy smile is crucial for determining the most effective non-surgical treatment strategy.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

The effectiveness of non-surgical treatments can depend on the specific technique employed. Generally, with the most frequently used methods, patients may observe results lasting around two to three months after their initial sessions. However, with ongoing treatments, the duration of the effects can be prolonged as the treated muscles adapt and are retrained.

If treatment is halted, the muscles will eventually return to their baseline function, leading to the reemergence of the gummy smile in its previous form, without any worsening of the condition

RETURNING TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES

Typically, you can go back to your usual activities shortly after your treatment. However, it’s recommended to avoid intense workouts or touching the treated area for the first 24 hours post-treatment.

POTIENTAL RISKS

Engaging in any non-surgical procedure carries inherent risks, so it’s crucial to be aware of these potential complications. While most patients do not encounter the following issues, it’s advisable to discuss them with your healthcare provider to ensure clarity.

Common side effects can manifest immediately or may take time to appear:

You might experience discomfort such as pain, burning sensations, or stinging at the injection site, along with possible bruising, swelling, or redness. Additional symptoms could include localized muscle weakness, drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows, skin tightness, itchiness, headaches, nausea, or flu-like symptoms.

In rare instances, effects of the treatment may extend beyond the injection site, leading to complications such as muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, double or blurred vision, difficulties in speaking, constipation, aspiration, and challenges with swallowing. These symptoms can emerge anywhere from hours to weeks post-injection and are more likely in patients receiving higher doses or those with pre-existing conditions that may increase vulnerability.

After your treatment, you may encounter a few typical side effects that usually subside over time:

  • Swelling at injection sites
  • Bruising
  • Redness at injection sites
  • Tenderness
  • Tightness

Additionally, a mild headache may occur; feel free to take paracetamol if needed.

Expected Results

You might start to see the results of your treatment within two to four days, though it can take up to 14 days for the full effects to become apparent. You may need additional sessions to reach your desired outcomes.

Post-Treatment Care

If you experience any inflammatory reactions or side effects, please contact the clinic immediately at 1300 373 662. Further treatments, medications, or even surgical options may be required.

For urgent matters outside of business hours, please visit your local medical center or emergency department.

You can resume your normal activities right after your treatment, including driving. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours. Additionally, steer clear of excessive sun exposure and extreme temperatures for two weeks following the procedure.

Refrain from touching or massaging the treated area. It’s also advisable to avoid facials, waxing, chemical peels, IPL, laser treatments, or any other skin procedures for a minimum of two weeks post-treatment.

You will receive both verbal and written post-treatment care instructions as part of your follow-up plan.
