Do you need a GP refferal to see a Plastic Surgeon?

Mon 10th Mar 2025

From 1 July 2023, all patients wanting to consult with Dr Dona will need to obtain a GP referral.

In 2023, Aphra, which is the medical board of Australia. Introduced new guidelines for medical practitioners who perform cosmetic surgery and procedures. One of these rules is the requirement of a referral from a GP or other medical specialist.

Why a GP referral is important

Just like any other referral, a GP referral includes important medical details for the specialist, such as your medical history, existing conditions, and current medications. Your GP will assess both your physical and mental health, and it’s also a great opportunity to openly discuss your motivation for reconstructive and/or cosmetic surgery with Dr Dona.

This process helps ensure continuity of care and supports your safety throughout your journey.

How long is a GP referral valid?

A referral from your general practitioner (GP) to Dr Dona is valid for 12 months from the date of your first appointment with the specialist. Keep in mind that the referral period starts from the day you first see the specialist, not the date the referral was written. Please be aware that your referral must be addressed to Dr Dona.

If you wish to see Dr Dona for a new or unrelated condition, you will need a new referral.

What if I don’t have a GP referral to see Dr Dona?

A GP referral is an absolute must, prior to consultation with Dr Dona. After you make an enquiry, our team will advise you that we will require a valid GP referral, to be sent to our practice no later than the day prior to your appointment with Dr Dona.

Body Dysmorphic Screening Test
