Overly large breasts often cause physical discomfort, including back, neck and shoulder pain. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is intended to reduce the size of the breasts by removing excess breast tissue and skin, improving the size, shape, and position. Breast reduction surgery relieves pain and discomfort typically associated with excessively large breasts.
Whilst there are several Breast Reduction surgical techniques, the anchor-shaped scar technique is the most common and involves an incision with the resultant scars extending around the areola, vertically down from the lower edge of the areola to the fold/crease of the breast and horizontally along the natural fold of the breast. After the excess skin, fat and breast tissue are removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position and the breast reshaped.
During your consultation with Dr Dona in Sydney, Dr Dona will evaluate the degree of ptosis (droop) of your breasts. You will be able to discuss your concerns relating to your breasts and the preferred outcome.
During your consultation, Dr Dona will tailor a surgical plan specifically for you and discuss the detailed surgical plan with you. Once you have completed your consultation with Dr Dona, you will be provided with a formalised quote. You will also be able to discuss possible surgery dates with one of our friendly patient liaison officers.
Cosmetic & Reconstructive Plastic Surgery procedures are always performed in a private hospital, meaning that part of the total cost of your Breast Reduction surgery will be for the use of the operating theatre and your postoperative recovery at the hospital where your surgery is performed. Typically, most patients can go home on the same day as their surgery and do not require an overnight stay.
Part of the total cost of your surgery is the anaesthetist’s fee. This is the specialist doctor that puts you to sleep for the surgery, monitors you throughout, and wakes you up at the end of the surgery. Before your surgery, the anaesthetist will meet with you to discuss the procedure and any prescribed antibiotics and pain medication you will be directed to take during your postoperative recovery. Everyone responds differently to an anaesthetic; however, your specialist anaesthetist will do all they can to ensure you wake up as comfortably as possible and have the appropriate medication to go home with to remain as comfortable as possible. Anaesthetist pricing can vary depending on the length of time your surgery will likely take.
There are various surgical techniques that can be used during Breast Reduction surgery, which can be read about on our Breast Reduction procedure page. During your initial consultation and after discussing your concerns, Dr Dona will be able to make a recommendation as to which type of Breast Reduction procedure will address your concerns. Some breast reductions are more complicated than others and can take longer to perform and therefore, they may be more expensive.
The cost of your follow-up appointments with Dr Dona is included in your initial surgery fees.
Breast Reduction is an elective surgery but is often carried out for health reasons, to ease the physical symptoms caused by excessively large breasts. Some of the fees may be covered by Medicare and your health fund; Dr Dona will advise whether this applies to you.
Whether your private health insurance covers Breast Reduction surgery largely depends on your policy and provider. If you have private health insurance with hospital cover, you may be eligible to have the hospital component subsidised. You should always confirm with your health fund what your level of coverage will pay for your surgery.
As can be appreciated by the above information, the only time we can provide a precise quote for a breast reduction is after your consultation with Dr Dona. To request a consultation, use the contact form below this article.
