Choosing Your Breast Implants

Tue 28th Jun 2022

The breast size and shape are highly subjective, largely dependent on personal preference, aesthetic goals, and body shape. While some women want their breast enhancement to be subtle enough to give a natural look, others want a bolder, more obvious look. For other women, the goal of improving breast symmetry may be their primary objective, particularly for those with tubular breast conditions.

During your initial consultation, Dr Dona will be able to advise you which type, size and shape implants will suit your body, taking into consideration your ideal goals and what is achievable on your body.

Factors when considering Breast Implants

Choosing the right breast implants for you requires thorough knowledge of your breasts and your body. This is due to the fact that each woman’s breasts are different, and the following factors will influence your implant choice:

  • The amount of natural breast tissue you have
  • The existing breast footprint
  • Your skin and breast tissue quality
  • Your chest and rib cage measurements
  • The distance between your areolas (nipples)
  • The level of symmetry, or asymmetry of your breasts
  • The level of ptosis in your breasts (droopiness)
  • The look you want

KNOW YOUR IMPLANT TYPE AND STYLE

Implant Shapes

Choosing the right breast implant for you requires some knowledge about the implant type and style. Although Dr Dona will guide you along, we recommend understanding the basics, prior to your consultation:

  • Round implants have a circular projection style, with an equal shape and volume of the implant above and below the horizontal midline. They can be either textured or smooth.
  • Anatomical implants AKA ‘’teardrop’’ implants, are shaped to imitate the asymmetric appearance of natural breasts by gently sloping down into a fuller, more rounded base. These implants are textured.

Saline or Silicone

Dr Dona only uses silicone breast implants.

Which Breast Implant Size, Type and Profile are Right for you?

Choosing the best implant size, type and profile shape can be overwhelming. That’s why the help of an experienced plastic surgeon is so crucial to help you decide.

To determine the implant that’s right for you, Dr Eddy Dona undergoes a careful physical examination to confirm what is technically possible on your frame and how to adjust that according to your aesthetic preference and anatomy. Let’s take a look at some deciding factors in choosing your breast implant:

Breast width:

Breast width is a critical measurement in determining your implant size. An implant with a slightly smaller or similar to the width of your breast is usually the choice. Of course, this is adjusted a little depending on how much cleavage and side boob you are wanting.

Breast profile:

An implant profile is a measurement of how far forward they project. They can vary from low, moderate, high to extra high profile. The amount of projection achieved is also determined by the width of the implant. A high-profile implant that is 13cm wide is going to project further forward than a high-profile implant that’s only 10cm wide.

What to Expect

  • First, you’ll be asked to fill out patient registration forms.
  • Next, you’ll talk to Dr Dona in person, so he can fully understand your aesthetic goals. Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions, and bring some images of the look you are thinking about.
  • A physical assessment of the breast and chest area is performed.
  • One of the key things that Dr Dona is trying to discover is your breast footprint – which includes the space that the ideal breast shape should take up.
  • Several implants that are technically suitable for your body are reviewed.
  • A discussion about the operation, recovery and potential complications follows.
